Memorial Day Safety Tips:

From Sheriff Robert A. Graves--We want you to have a safe and happy Memorial Day. Here are some safety tips for the Holiday weekend.
If you are traveling, remember, planning ahead will save time and stress.
Get plenty of rest the night before traveling; extra rest will keep you focused and alert.
Leave early to avoid traffic. The added time will allow more time for rest stops, bathroom breaks and meal time.
Check your car before trips. Check oil and fluid levels, tire pressures, and don’t forget to check the spare tire.
Have entertainment for the kids, this will make your trip just a little easier.
When flying, have all your travel documents and arrive at the airport early. Check the TSA website for current travel information and restrictions.
Wear sunscreen, (make sure the kids are well covered). Sun hats, plenty of water, and other items will extend your time and enjoyment in the sun.

WATER SAFETY:

Memorial Day is the opening of many pools, and water activities pick up from this point through summer.
Use the BUDDY SYSTEM, don’t swim alone.
Swim in areas with lifeguards.
Make sure the kids are comfortable with swimming. Lessons are a great way to help with this, local pools and the YMCA offer swimming lessons.
NEVER leave children unattended near bodies of water! The younger the child the more supervision is required.
Pick up unused pool toys and move them from the edge of the pool. These items attract very small children to the water’s edge.
It’s ok and advisable that young or inexperienced swimmers use Coast Guard approved life jackets in any body of water or pool.
Currents in rivers, streams, and rip tides at beaches can be dangerous.
If you are boating, have life jackets for EVERYONE on board. All skiers, tubers and boarders should wear their life jacket.
Just like highway drivers, boat drivers should not consume alcohol. Alcohol and swimming is a bad combination.
Install and keep barriers closed around pools for children’s safety. 4 Foot barriers are the recommended height for these barriers with self-closing and self-latching controls that open upward and away from the pool or hot tub.

From Sheriff Robert A. Graves and all of us at your Sheriff’s Office we wish you a wonderful and safe holiday!
