The Hays County Sheriff’s Office together with Wimberley High School hosted a very successful Coffee With A Cop this morning. Several Deputies, parents, school staff, and many students had the opportunity to visit in a relaxed atmosphere.

Donuts and creamer were provided by Wimberley HEB. This was the first event of its kind held at Wimberley High School, and we hope to make it a tradition.

The Hays County Sheriff’s Office will be coordinating with all the High Schools in Hays County to host similar events this year.

The cold weather is here! The Hays County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind everyone that our pets are extremely vulnerable during times of cold weather, and precautions should be taken to protect them. Here are some tips to keep your pets safe during the winter months.

• Keep pets inside out of severe cold
• If pets are outside, provide a doghouse with door away from the wind
• Line doghouse with straw or cedar shavings
• Make sure they have access to fresh water and food
• Do not leave antifreeze, coolant or windshield wiper fluid within reach
• Make sure your cat hasn’t crawled under the car hood for warmth

Additionally, it will serve you well to take steps in protecting your pipes and plants. Here are some tips in taking care of pipes and plants.

Caulk around pipes where they enter the house, close foundation vents and use wood or foam blocks to fit vent openings around pipes.

• Wrap outside faucets or hose bibs in molded foam insulation or layers of old newspapers and cover with plastic to keep out moisture
• If you have a separate shut-off valve for outside faucets, turn it off
• Drain in-ground sprinkler systems

Protect pipes inside the house

• Insulate pipes in unheated areas (crawl space, attic, garage or basement)
• Open cupboard doors in kitchen and bathrooms
• Let faucets drip a little if the temperature dips below freezing
• Know how to shut off water valves

Protect plants:

• Bring sensitive plants inside
• Protect roots and foliage of plants with mulch, straw, bubble plastic or cloth
• Move potted plants out of the wind

The Hays County Brown Santa program has started its annual drive for money, food, and toys to assist families in need in Hays County. The program consists of volunteers from the Hays County Sheriff’s Office and members of the community. Brown Santa seeks donations from citizens and local businesses for toys, canned goods and money. Last year over 400 families were given assistance in food and/or toys in Hays County.

Brown Santa is accepting new toys for children up to the age of 16. Any toy that is already gift-wrapped needs to have a tag that identifies the toy, age group, and if it is for a male or female. Toys can also be picked up from your residence or business if convenient. Money contributions in the form of a check or money order made payable to "Hays County Brown Santa" can be mailed to:

Hays County Brown Santa

P.O. Box 1475

San Marcos, TX 78667

The deadline for accepting unwrapped toys will be December 7, 2018 and for wrapped toys December 11, 2018. All toys will be wrapped on December 8, 2018 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and on December 11th & 12th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Children are welcome in the warehouse to help out!

Deputies and helpers will be delivering the toys and food on Saturday December 15, 2018 from 7:00 am until approximately 12:00 noon. Any family requesting assistance from Brown Santa can sign up in the lobby of the Sheriff's Office or at one of the locations below. The deadline for accepting applications will be December 6, 2018 at 5:00 pm.
