The Osage County Sheriff's Office has received a grant from the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office to help keep motorists safe while commuting in Osage County. Deputies will begin additional enforcement of traffic laws effective immediately with a increased emphasis on seat belt and impaired driving enforcement. Sergeant Kevin Young says the lack of seat belt usage by those involved in motor vehicle collisions often contributes to severe injury or death and the funds provided by the OHSO will help deputies remind motorists to buckle up when on the road. The fine for failing to wear a seat belt is twenty (20) dollars. Thanks to the funding, deputies will also be assigned impaired driving shifts in which they will be able to focus on traffic enforcement without being assigned calls for service. While deputies will be assigned shifts throughout the year, extra shifts will be assigned during peak holiday travel times. All deputies working the traffic enforcement shifts will be in addition to those already on duty in a patrol function.
