SUBJECT: Orange County Sheriff’s Office is awarded NYS Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Grants

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded two New York State Homeland Security and Emergency Services Grants 2016.

The first grant is for $50,000.00 to develop an explosive detection canine (K9) team. The Sheriff’s Office will use the grant money to fund a new explosive detection K9 team at the Sheriff’s Office to supplement the pre-existing K9 teams and replace a K9 team that will be retiring. The Sheriff’s Office will purchase a dog and a K9 equiped patrol car with the grant money.

The second grant is for $100,000.00 which focuses on improving tactical team’s capabilities as well as to help develop new response capabilities as it relates to high-risk incidents including active shooter events and counter terrorism missions. The Sheriff’s Office will utilize the grant funding to purchase rappelling gear, tactical headsets, an ATF explosive magazine (explosives storage) and the largest portion of the funding going to further training of the tactical team members.

SUBJECT: “Empty Chair” Teen Initiative

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office will participate in the Empty Chair Teen Initiative April 24-28, 2017. Each year, thousands of high school students across New York State look forward to attending their prom and graduation ceremony. These memorable moments for parents, siblings, educators and the community become meaningless when a child dies in a car crash. Regrettably, this scenario happens all too often and law enforcement is tasked with making the difficult “knock on the door”. In an effort to reduce these tragedies, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee launched “The Empty Chair” educational campaign. The theme is to symbolize the missing high school senior on graduation day. To complement the ongoing teen driver educational efforts, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office will assign patrols to focus on traffic safety threats in the vicinity of high schools throughout the county.

Orange County Sheriff Office patrols will look for, but is not limited to, the following violations:
Speed in school zones
Seatbelt and Child Restraints
Cell phone use-composing, sending, reading, accessing, browsing, transmitting, saving, or retrieving electronic data such as e-mail, text messages, pictures or WebPages
Passing Stopped School Buses
Graduated driver license provisions
Underage drinking and impaired driving.
