NIAGARA COUNTY - Niagara County Sheriff’s Office K9 Chief has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. The vest was sponsored by Pam, Corey and Todd Harmon of Lockport, NY and embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of Chief Craig C. Harmon”.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501c(3) charity located in East Taunton, MA whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. The non-profit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their K9 officers. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provided over 3,300 protective vests in 50 states, through private and corporate donations, at a value of $5.7 million dollars.
The program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified and at least 20 months of age. New K9 graduates, as well as K9s with expired vests, are eligible to participate.
The donation to provide one protective vest for a law enforcement K9 is $950.00. Each vest has a value between $1,744 – $2,283, and a five-year warranty and an average weight of 4-5 lbs. Niagara County Sheriff's Office Press Release: Structure Fire - Town of Wheatfield

Wheatfield, NY: On 03/18/2019 at approximately 0743 hours, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a resident of 487 103rd Street reporting heavy smoke coming from the basement. Further information indicated that four puppies were reportedly still in the basement at the time of the call.

Upon arrival patrol and fire personnel, the residence was evacuated. A male and female occupant, along with several dogs escaped the smoke filled residence. Four puppies, however, approximately two weeks old, were unable to be rescued due to the heavy smoke and were found deceased in the basement.

Multiple Volunteer Fire Companies, along with EMS personnel responded to assist with the fire. The occupants of the residence were treated and released at the scene. National Grid responded to shut off power to the residence. Niagara County Fire Investigators responded to determine origin and cause. The estimated property damage is unknown at this time. Notification was made to the American Red Cross to assist in providing care for the occupants of the household. Investigation is continuing at this time.

Niagara County Sheriff's Office Press Release: Underage Enforcement Detail

Niagara County - On 03/16/2019 from 17:00 hrs - 21:30 hrs, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police, and New York State Liquor Authority did a joint underage alcohol enforcement detail throughout Niagara County. During this detail, twenty convenience stores were checked by Deputies, Troopers, and State Liquor Authority agents utilizing underage operatives. Eighteen stores successfully denied the underage operatives alcohol and two allowed the operatives to purchase alcohol. Arrested during this detail were Daniel J. Bachman, 49, of Gasport, an employee of Crosby's on Telegraph Road, Middleport, and Jacob A. Torcasio, 18, of Niagara Falls, an employee of 7-11 on Oliver Street, North Tonawanda. Bachman is due to appear in the Town of Royalton Court and Torcasio is due to appear in the City of North Tonawanda Court. Both were charged with Unlawfully Dealing with a Child 1st degree and Prohibited Sales, which are both misdemeanors.
