Three Scott County Sheriff's Office Deputies and citizen William Turgi of Prior Lake were recognized for their life-saving efforts during yesterday's meeting of the Scott County Board of Commissioners.

Last August, William Turgi came upon an ATV crash with a severely injured driver. He rendered life-saving aid, including utilizing a tow strap as a tourniquet to the victim's severely injured arm and contacted 911. Once Sheriff's Deputies Robert Ryan, Ben Koestner, and Jacob Lannon arrived, they applied another tourniquet to the armpit area of the arm, applied gauze to a deep laceration on the victim's thigh, and administered oxygen to stabalize the victim's breathing.

Because of the efforts of William Turgi and these three Deputies, Cody Colosio survived the accident and was able to thank each of these four individuals for their life-saving act.

Tax Season is quickly approaching and Scott County frequently has reports of fraud having to do with the IRS and taxes. The Minnesota Department of Revenue has some tips to help protect you from fraud this season.

What do I need to know?

Individuals or organizations may falsely represent themselves as being from the department. Use caution and NEVER provide personal information unless you are sure the situation is legitimate.

When we contact you by phone, mail, or email, we will NEVER:
• Demand immediate payment without first mailing a letter.
• Demand that you pay taxes and not allow you to question or appeal the amount you owe.
• Require that you pay your taxes a certain way, such as with a prepaid debit card.
• Threaten to contact police or law enforcement agencies to ARREST you for not paying.

What if I receive a suspicious phone call or letter?

If you are concerned about a possibly fraudulent contact from someone claiming to be from the department, call us at 651-296-3781 or 1-800-652-9094 (toll-free). We can determine if the contact you received was legitimate.

What if I receive a suspicious email?

We will NEVER ask you to provide, update, or verify personal information if you did not previously email us. Do not respond to such emails, and contact us with questions or concerns.

Phishing (“fishing for information” and “hooking” victims) is a scam involving emails sent to trick you into revealing personal, financial information. When you send scammers this information, they can use it to steal your identity.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Duluth Police Department as they mourn the loss of K9 Haas. Haas passed away in the line of duty last night and died protecting his handler and other officers. Run free over the rainbow bridge, Haas💔💙. Your sacrifices will never be forgotten! #goodboy

Please be aware of the thin ice under the “Knotty Oar Marina” of Prior Lake. Today thin ice signs were placed on both sides by Deputy Autenrieth.

This is a reoccurring thin area so please be aware throughout the season of possible open water. We want Minnesotans enjoying the outdoors to stay nice and dry this season!

Today is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Throughout our nation, Law Enforcement Officers have chosen a profession that puts their life on the line every day for their communities. They've answered a call to public service that is demanding and often unappreciated. National Law Enforcement Day provides an opportunity to thank the fine women and men behind the badge for the service they provide to all of us.

Thanks to all who have served or are currently serving in Law Enforcement!
