I really recommend coming into this location I had a great experience. Trent was so helpful, he was so understanding. I’m glad people like him still exist. Him and his team bailed my boyfriend in just hours! Really nice genuine guy. Thank you for your help.

WHO'S READY FOR HOCKEY???

We've been working with the Hockey Day Minnesota Committee and other emergency responders to ensure a safe event this weekend. We also had to test out the rink ice too... we found that it was slick, but everyone remained upright! The guy in the white shirt smiling ear to ear is your Sheriff Ernie Beitel, an avid hockey fan.

We also checked the lake ice, added a little more ice in the latest cold snap and the inlet was almost completely iced over, but you should avoid the Mississippi on both ends of the lake. Remember that ice can never be called 100% safe and you should continuously pay attention to ice conditions if you venture on the lake.

GETTING READY...
HOCKEY DAY 2019!!!

Most people from the area know about the inlet and outlet of the Mississippi River through Bemidji and how dangerous these spots are with inconsistent ice. We expect thousands of people to visit Beltrami County this week and many of them will want to enjoy the lake. The events at the South Shore are going to be a big draw, but so is Paul Bunyan Park. What lies between the two, that’s right... open water. We normally don’t mark these areas as prominently as we have this year... but we don’t want anyone going through the ice. Our Boat and Water Division with help from the FD and bailiffs have placed flashing beacons and fencing up to warn people.

Sheriff Ernie Beitel wants to reiterate that ice is never 100% safe. Our office has been checking ice conditions and have found 13-20” of ice... but in some areas as little as six inches, especially on the north end of Lake Bemidji. With the varying temperatures and liquid precipitation this winter, there are also areas of slush/water on the ice surface. If you venture on the ice, drive with caution and keep distance between you and other vehicles. Slow down at access points. Your vehicle can actually make a wave under the ice which can result in significant deterioration of the ice.

Please be responsible on the lake, and especially during Hockey Day. We will have an extra presence on and off the lake this week and weekend.
