The Essex County Sheriff's Department is a law enforcement agency serving the 34 communities in Essex County, Massachusetts. ECSD operates the following correctional facilities: Middleton Jail/House of Correction, Essex County Prerelease and Reentry Center in Lawrence, and the Women in Transition center in Salisbury. ECSD also operates two Civil Process offices as well as several Offices of Community Corrections (OCC). ECSD works closely with and supports the efforts of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Governor Baker addresses the Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association at their monthly meeting. The Governor discussed the Criminal Justice Reform bill, the medically assisted treatment (MAT) pilot program, and several other public safety issues that affect the Sheriffs.

Sheriff Coppinger attended the swearing in ceremony for Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett's fifth term.
On Wednesday January 8th, District Attorney Blodgett was sworn in by Judge Randy Chapman for his 5th term since 2003 in front of a packed auditorium at the Higgins Middle School in Peabody. D.A. Blodgett then swore in Assistant District Attorneys before laying out the initiatives that his office will undertake in the coming years.

ECSD Mourns the Loss of Retired K9 Trouble

Sgt. Jenna Walsh announced that K9 Trouble passed away on December 24, 2018. He was 12 ½. K9 Trouble served the Essex County Sheriff’s Department from October 2008 until his retirement in January 2016. He was a dual-purpose dog who achieved several USPCA PD1 and narcotic detection certifications. He had the honor of being featured in the 2013 Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog Calendar. Sgt. Walsh stated “I am forever grateful for his dedication, friendship, protection and his unconditional love. He will be missed terribly.” K9 Trouble spent his retirement years at home with Sgt. Walsh and her family.

Sheriff Kevin Coppinger welcomed the family of Officer Ronald Tarentino, Jr. who, on behalf of The Officer Ronald Tarentino, Jr. Charitable Fund, presented Sgt. Jon Latorella and his family with a check to assist with ongoing medical costs for their young son's care in a Boston hospital. Caitlin Tarentino, brother of Officer Tarentino, presented the check and a gift bag to Sgt. Latorella.

Established in 2018, the Officer Ronald Tarentino, Jr. Charitable Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring Ron's memory. The charitable fund has a multi-purpose focus: Acts of Kindness, Acts of Generosity and Service to the Community.
