Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department PASSDOWN

The following activity runs from September 18th through September 19th and officers from Team 2 and Team 4 responded to 310 calls for service over this 48 hour time period, with an average of 7 officers on duty at a time.

Highlights:
On September 18, 2017 at approximately 11:43pm, an unidentified suspect entered into the 7-11 store located at 25960 CR 20 and approached the store’s clerk while displaying a handgun. After having the clerk open the cash register, a second suspect entered into the store and both suspects began removing cash from the cash register and taking cigarettes from behind the counter. After both suspects had fled from the store, gun fire was exchanged between them and the store’s clerk.
The suspects were described as black males in their early 20’s who were wearing ski masks. Their approximate height is 5’11”, and their approximate weight is 150lbs.
No injuries were reported as a result of this incident

On September 19, an elderly male wandered away from his residence. After several hours of searching, the missing gentleman was found safe in Mishawaka. It was found that he had walked to a previous home of his, rather than his current residence. Officers then transported the gentleman back to his current residence.
Had this gentleman been enrolled in Project Lifesaver, a program offered by the Sheriff’s department, the hours spent searching for him could have turned into minutes.
Project Lifesaver provides a timely response to save lives and reduce potential injury for adults and children who suffer from Alzheimer's, Autism, Prader-Wili, dementia and other cognitive disorders that can cause at-risk wandering. Project Lifesaver brings peace of mind to families, caregivers and communities.

Project Lifesaver relies on trained personnel who respond and conduct searches combined with the latest equipment and technology which is often tested in real world situations.

Citizens enrolled in Project Lifesaver wear a small personal transmitter around the wrist or ankle that emits an individualized tracking signal. When caregivers notify the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department that a loved one is missing, a trained search and rescue team is quickly deployed to the wanderer's area and starts searching with a mobile tracking system.

Find out more information about Project Lifesaver by visiting the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department website at http://www.elkhartcountysheriff.com/resources/project-lifesaver/

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department Receives Donation from Heartland RV Company for K9 Unit

On Friday, September 15, 2017, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department received a generous donation from Heartland RV Company of $10,000 to be used towards the departments K9 Unit.

Currently, the Sheriff’s Department utilizes six dogs, three in corrections, and three in patrol. This donation will allow the department to add another K9 unit to our patrol division as well as allow the purchase for additional K9 equipment.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department K9 Unit offers several different services beyond aggression training. K9s are trained to find different kinds of illegal substances on a person, in a vehicle, or in and around buildings. Additionally, K9s are trained to track human scent; this can be used to track a fleeing suspect as well as a missing child.

Overall, the K9 Unit serves as an irreplaceable asset to our officers as well as the community, and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is thankful for donations that facilitate the continuation of this program.
