Registered Sex Offender Scam

The Weld County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous calls from citizens throughout Weld County who are receiving calls from an unknown individual who is claiming to be Captain Alan Caldwell with the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.

The caller states that you are a registered sex offender and have a warrant out for your arrest. The caller states you can take care of the warrant by posting bond and asks for a payment over the phone. The number the scammer if calling from is 970-573-4695 EXT. 1.

The scammer is also calling and claiming to be a Deputy Erika Hernandez. The Weld County Sheriff’s Office does not have anyone employed by that name.

The Weld County Sheriff’s Office will never try to resolve an arrest warrant by payment over the phone. The Weld County Sheriff’s Office will also never accept payment in the form gift cards, pre-paid credit cards or any other type of credit through any store. Scammers may ask you to retrieve one of these items and give them the card number over the phone. Ask for the individual’s name, phone number and badge number; hang up and immediately call (970) 356-4015. Do not give any money to these individuals.

Anyone with information regarding this or any other crime is asked to call the Weld County Sheriff’s Office at 970-356-4015 or Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or 1-800-444-3776. Today we welcomed 20 new faces to the Detentions Division of the Weld County Sheriff's Office. Over the next four weeks these new recruits will learn the skills necessary to safeguard and hold inmates at the Weld County Jail. They will learn interpersonal communication skills and defensive tactics, as well as a variety of other skills that will help them be successful every day. Their academy will be followed by a rigorous field training period with a training officer before they are signed off to work on their own.

Their journey is just beginning, and we look forward to seeing how they develop as deputies.

Good luck, and welcome to the Weld County Family!
