Our hearts are heavy this morning as we learn of the death of Phoenix PD Officer Paul Rutherford in an on-duty vehicle collision. Paul was a 22 year veteran of the department who leaves behind a wife and two children. There are no words to express what a loss like this means to all of us who work in law enforcement.

Though we don’t yet know the specifics of this incident, I must once again implore drivers: Don’t text. Don’t speed. Move over and slow down when you see flashing lights. Keep us safe so we can continue to keep you safe.

May God bless Officer Rutherford and his family.

- Sheriff Paul Penzone
